Same. I came to Lemmy because Reddit sucks, I’m looking for memes, cat videos, humorous and/or thought provoking content.
Instead my all feed is filled with an echo chamber of political content. Not gonna lie, Lemmy is forum that takes itself away too seriously, I don’t interact because I don’t want to argue politics with strangers online, and I know any differing options get down voted to hell.
I really wish Lemmy had a little more fun engaging, apolitical content. If it did, I’d be all over it.
Out of curiosity do you have any evidence to back that claim for those raised in an environment where you have a high degree of science education? Like I know without science to explain the natural world, religion makes “sense”. But as long as you have a strong knowledge base in science I’m not convinced people would be easily swayed by religion.
For example, I was raised without religion, and I’ve never seen much of a reason to learn about it. That being said whenever I hear someone talk about religion it sounds particularly absurd to my ears. “Sky Daddy will fix all your ills, you just need to trust in sky Daddy. Sky Daddy doesn’t like it when you X.” I’m sorry, what? Uh no.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You have one (1) free teleportation that must be used within the next 24 hours or it disappears forever. Do you use it? Where do you go?
3·1 year agoDo tell, I have no clue why you’d go to New Zealand.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some valid criticisms of Lemmy do you hear from people who tried out the platform?
214·2 years agoI recall another thread a few weeks ago where someone suggested a no political discussion day, and everyone down-voted him and gave them angry responses. I recall one up-voted response saying “everything is political”.
This place has become an echo chamber for cranky old Linux users and is really uninviting to anyone else.
One of the things I miss about Reddit is the diversity of opinions and viewpoints on the platform. (I didn’t love the insane amount of reposts and bot traffic)

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•I miss when the quiet part was kept quietEnglish
1·2 years agoProbably 30+ years ago I went to a Star Trek convention and went to go see George Takei speak, at the time I was pretty young and was all geared up to hear stories of his time filming the show and/or movies. Instead he spoke about his time in the interment camps. As a ten-ish year old kid, I was pretty confused, but yeah it would be a lie if I said that didn’t stick with me.

Technology@lemmy.world•Anti-Aging Hopes Rise as Organ Rejection Drug Rapamycin Gains AttentionEnglish
1·2 years agoIndeed there are, but just under half of all of medical studies performed world wide are performed in the States, roughly half of the world’s pharmaceutical companies based in the States, and the US has consistently lead the world in medical innovations, with almost 50 percent more innovations than from the EU and Switzerland combined.
My point is not to sound US centric, but to say there is a lot of capital and willpower in the US pharmaceutical industry, and without that willpower it will be significantly harder to get rapamycin accepted as a viable longevity drug.

Technology@lemmy.world•Anti-Aging Hopes Rise as Organ Rejection Drug Rapamycin Gains AttentionEnglish
14·2 years agoSee that’s the interesting thing about rapamycin, it’s an old drug that has been used for immuno-suppression for years now, only just now scientists are discovering this interesting side effect. The patient on rapamycin has expired so you can get a generic prescription for cheap.
But ironically because the patent expired there’s no money in it for the drug companies to get it approved for longevity purposes, so who knows if it will ever become approved for this purpose.
Hi friend, I propose you try an experiment: post a small handful of anonymous comments on the Internet, try to make them benign as possible but casually slip in an acknowledgement that you are vegan. Something along the lines of “God that recipe looks amazing, but I think I might swap out the beef broth for veggie broth as I am vegan” like I said the point of this experiment is to say something completely as benign and inoffensive as possible.
Once you post sit back and wait for the responses to roll in. You will likely find that while not every time, it is incredibly common for people to send you pictures of bacon, and an abundant of angry responses to the mere offhand mention of the word.
I sincerely wish it was a straw man fallacy, but it unfortunately is a exceedingly common response to the word.
Hey non-vegan, fun fact: No one really cares when you tell them eating plants are more efficient.
Common responses include “bAc0Nnnnnn!” and “I’m gonna eat two times the amount of meat to make your efforts useless”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many mosquitos do you kill every day?
2·2 years agoNone. The bastards have been known to eat me alive, but it just seems like a fools errand, as if I’m going to make a dent in their population.
Besides I’m morally opposed to killing living beings, so the act seems rather cruel unless I’m in mortal danger.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many mosquitos do you kill every day?
1·2 years agoAs someone who spent virtually the entirety of his life in a inner city in the North East, of North America we have lots of mosquitoes here. Which parts of the world do you come from? Some place with a good mosquito control department I assume?

Space@lemmy.world•Terraforming Mars could be easier than scientists thought
5·2 years agoYeah the only catch is that it turns out humans are really good at warming planets up, and that’s one of the big stumbling blocks to making Mars habitable. Reversing the process is not something humanity has ever done before. So why not turn one of our biggest bugs and turn it into a feature? Plus if we are going to experiment with intentionally changing the atmosphere of a planet I’d rather we experiment on a place where the entirety of humanity isn’t currently living.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that the recommended daily fiber intake is 25g for women and 38g for men in the USA. 95% of the country does not meet this amount.
4·2 years agoYes, they are a great source of insoluble fiber.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•On the Internet, what is a dead giveaway that someone is actually a kid?
5·2 years agoOnce yearssss ago I dated a girl who was one of those uber conservative types, and early on tried to set a rule that I wasn’t allowed to masturbate as that was cheating in her eyes. I remember just laughing in her face and my response was a firm “no”. I can tell this annoyed her, but quickly realized this wasn’t an argument she was going to win and quickly dropped the matter. Anyway I guess I dodged a bullet with that one.
Friendly debates can be a healthy thing. Angry, heated, bitter arguments? Yeah, I’d argue they aren’t too great for your mental health.

Technology@lemmy.world•New York governor to launch bill banning smartphones in schoolsEnglish
181·2 years agoAs someone who went through the NY public school system many years ago, I can confirm hats were/are hard banned. Like unless it was for religious reasons you really couldn’t even think about putting something on your head.
Cell phones were also banned in my youth but I guess times have changed?
God I’d kill for a place with no trolls, politics, shit posts, where your allowed to disagree and have spirited discussions on topics but mods would step in before it becomes an argument.
I feel like everywhere you go online nowadays there’s a `well ackwchullly’ type in the corner. I’d love a place people can get together share ideas and joke around.
Long story short, if you build it they will come.

Memes@lemmy.ml•Who could have seen this coming except for people warning about it for decades
4·2 years agoYes i understand what you are getting at there, but my question is precisely how long does one have before the wheels fall off while eating a strict vegan diet? Are we talking a matter of days, weeks, months, years, or decades?

You sure about that? Ethan Peck is four years older than Nimoy was when he started to play Spock. The current iteration of Spock only feels younger because Ethan clearly has a good skincare routine.
