This is a really interesting read, but this dude missed a major component of best practices, which is that your architecture needs to be able to respond to a proper disaster, which includes Amazon just dropping out of the sky and nuking your entire account.
Frankly, it’s shocking that he didn’t have local copies or a home server that he kept backups too. I’ve seen some people mention that a multi-cloud architecture is hard to set up, which is true, it’s also expensive, but I don’t think it would be super hard to set up, like, a blob storage in Azure, or a Google Cloud Storage, to just keep backups of whatever you’re working on. We should always keep in mind that our accounts getting locked is always a possibility.
It’s kinda weird, normally when you hear about things like this, it’s the other way around where somebody was running a major production component on personal infrastructure and couldn’t handle the bare metal.
During the entire article I kept thinking how it wasn’t best practice to use the same cloud for everything, that you needed a different cloud because occasionally, your account can just get nuked from orbit. People dont understand that these corporations are really just held together with luck prayers and duct tape. Software enables us to develop in the worst ways possible, and then call it production.

9·10 months agoYou’ll notice in the article that said the show creators really happy not the VFX artists.
In fact the article doesn’t talk about any review from any vfx artist of the effects in the show, only that the public seem to be pleased with them.
I expect this type of behavior to increase as companies look more and more to increase their profit margin.
Feels like gassing adhders up.
Fun but not accurate.

271·11 months agoTo add to that people put off the slogan Israel’s been committing a genocide in Gaza for the past two years.
I I think if you’re committing genocide it’s fair to wish for the destruction of the military force doing said genocide.
If the slogan makes you feel uncomfortable that’s a “you problem” and I feel like you need to do some soul searching about why you’re protecting those committing a genocide.
Yes I do know about the Holocaust, and the Dreyfus Affair, no I don’t think that justifies the creation of Israel as a state and certainly not one that’s as blood soaked Israel is.

8·11 months agoOh I don’t give a crap about their “savings”.
Even if self checkout is more expensive to the companies I still prefer self-checkout for personal reasons rather than economical ones.
Besides the issues and opportunities for theft that self checkout creates means that it’s probably a wash as far as how much money they’re saving.
I definitely understand though not wanting to like scan your own groceries or deal with the whole system it would refer somebody else to do it. That’s why they should have both available.

People are using it to steal because people can’t afford the basic necessities anymore and we’ve lost a shit ton of our purchasing power.

This is missing the bigger picture, which is that a ton of companies rely on VPN services to work. So if they block VPN services to the entirety of the public in Michigan, they’re basically going to delete their entire IT sector and tech sector overnight.
