I’ve not seen much information about Bolivia in a while, now learning the elections have gone horribly. The last thing I heard was about infighting between Luis Acre and Evo Morales.

I’ve only been following it a bit so someone else can hopefully add more details.

The election for president took place on 17/8 but since no candidate won a majority it now goes to a runoff on 19/10.

Due to Evo not being able to run and the infighting between him and Acre he pushed his supporters to submit null votes so MAS did not make the cut. So we’re in a waiting period to see who will win but either way it’s a blow to the left in the country.

My understanding is that Evo still has large support from the indigenous groups and they may be looking at a non electoral route but haven’t heard much details on that and have no idea if that’s even feasible.

Edit: Deleting my last 2 paragraphs as @[email protected] has a much better comment covering those.

The constitution that was instated in 2019 during his first term has a term limit of 2. He was able to run for a third term since the courts ruled that since his first term was before this constitution it didn’t count.

Trying to run again though goes against the term limit. MAS tried to pass a referendum in 2016 to change that so that he could run again but it narrowly lost.

I believe he tried to have the courts change the term limit in the run up to this election but not sure on what ground they tried to pitch that and it didn’t work.
