The case had already been brought by Minneapolis residents before Good was shot and killed. The residents argued that their constitutional rights were being violated by the federal agents.
Now the U.S. Justice Department is investigating top Democratic politicians in Minnesota.
The judge has given the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, 72 hours to comply with the new rules. It is not yet clear whether the department will appeal.
The U.S. Department of Justice has reportedly begun a criminal investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to U.S. media, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has also been subpoenaed.
The Justice Department has not responded to questions from U.S. media, but Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote on X that “no one in Minnesota is above the law.”
Comments on ICE
The Justice Department is said to believe both Democrats obstructed the immigration agency ICE. The investigation concerns remarks Walz and Frey made about ICE’s actions in Minneapolis.
Since 37-year-old Renee Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent, unrest has gripped the city and protests against ICE have increased. Walz and Frey were openly critical of the conduct of the thousands of immigration agents.
On X, Frey reacted indignantly: “This is clearly an attempt to intimidate me because I stand up for Minneapolis.” Walz also responded to the news: “Using the justice system as a weapon against your opponents is an authoritarian strategy,” he said. “The only person who is not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”
Video Footage
Good, a mother of three, was shot in the head last week while trying to drive away from the agents. Video footage of the moment shows Good’s car first reversing slightly and then moving forward. Just before that, ICE agents approached the vehicle.
The Trump administration, particularly Vice President J.D. Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, says the agent acted in self-defense. Minneapolis Mayor Frey immediately questioned that account after seeing the footage.
The FBI is investigating the death of the 37-year-old woman but has refused involvement by the Minnesota state Attorney General’s Office.
but they have immunity and haven’t been found guilty in any case yet…
