Great article! I agree that the left needs to better present its vision to the world, both as a concrete political proposal, as well as in general popular culture, things like art and stories that show the future.

I’m not sure if this is a thing already, but maybe monthly events could be organized here for reading and discussing specific solarpunk novels, competitions on creating solarpunk art etc? It would be one way to strenghten a specific image of the community that could be used to manifest ourselves to the world.

I was at a student project that just transitions to a being a normal job once you get your BSc, and there was one guy on our team who nobody knows how he got there, since there were objectively better students (in terms of grades and knowledge) who got rejected. He was beyond useless and always got other people to do his work for him.

Anyways, the company I worked at offered internships for students, and the main criteria for getting accepted was your average grade. I was present to witness that guy going on a call with someone who determines who gets the internship to vouch for his friend. His friend had an average grade far under 8 (which is honestly embarassing at our uni), but this dude said how his friend is very motivated, wants to work, the grade problem is only there because those are some subjects he doesn’t care about, and he personally stands behind him that he’ll be a grear intern.

Well it worked, that guy got the internship and other students who actually knew something got rejected because they didn’t have connections inside the company. I imagine that’s a story that gets repeated often. Higher mamagers don’t really know who’s doing what, so people who know how to confidently bullshit can talk themselves into and out of many situations and they often form connections with similar people.

It was actually quite an interesting discovery that Newton’s first law, the way it’s usually repeated, was written in Thomas Hobbes’ “Leviathan”, which was published when Newton was around 8 years old.

Just finished watching it, and honestly that’s the idea I got after those red flags that jumpscared me when I was watching that linux sucks video. I think I watched them up until 2018, and I remember finding them entertaining and they always ended on a postive note, but I knew absolutely nothing about Lunduke apart from those 4 or 5 videos, that’s why I was so shocked to find out that he’s a generic right wing parrot.

I really liked his “Linux sucks” presentations when I watched them many years ago, but I didn’t know anything about him beyond that. Then some time last year I saw that he made another one, and I decided to watch it mainly for nostalgia, and I was shocked to see so many points about how linux companies are woke, something about opensuse firing anyone who was right-wing and redhat doing some white shaming move or something. I paused, checked his actual channel and holy shit. More than 90% was anti-woke “journalism”, and has been for years now. I was severely disappointed.

My brother brought back Marmite for me to try when he was in the UK. I thought it was… weird, but it grew on me over time. Please start exporting this stuff, I miss it.

Update: this has been popping in and out of my head ever since I saw it, and I started learning Rust yesterday. They have won.

Some C/C++ extension process once reduced my laptop to a crawl, and I couldn’t close VS Code, so I killed the process through the task manager, simple enough, right?

Long story short, I started smelling burning plastic and saw that, somehow, there was no VS Code process, but the extension had a separate process that was still running at full speed doing idk what. I almost burned myself when I picked up my laptop. So I’m not very happy when I see VS Code

Is this really what we are going to be? I don’t recall the community every banning people left and right for comments like these. I myself made similar arguments before, where is my ban and comment removal? OP here did not post anything in bad faith, they didn’t come to troll, nobody complained and there also wasn’t a flood of the community. There was a total of 17 comments, 7 were removed, and 5 are just the mod getting into fights with people, and the post was locked after that. This is something you support?

Speaking of the mod, they are aggressive and insulting in every comment they make, almost every post is “don’t vote for Harris”, and this has been flooding the local instance for some time now (11 posts “don’t vote for Harris” in 2 days last week). There is absolutely nothing constructive in this whole story, just one person making as much noise as possible without adding anything constructive and then banning people who make good faith counter-arguments. I thought this was one mod out of control, but if you support all of this, if this is what the slrpnk anarchist community is, I have to say that I am profoundly disappointed in this instance. I can only hope that the majority of slrpnk.net would condemn this whole story, they just aren’t aware.

Oh wow. I actually thought about bringing this up somewhere, but it was late and I went to sleep, I didn’t know that there was already a post. On one hand I’m glad this got out, on the other hand it saddens me that this likely did a lot of damage to both the community and the view of anarchists in general, since it takes just one person like this to overshadow 10 anarchists willing to have conversations in good faith. In an anarchist community, it’s anarchists who should decide what sort of content and posts they want in their community, not a bunch of electioneering liberals who want to swamp the entirety of lemmy with their US-centric liberal viewpoints.

As far as I know, nobody complained about anything in the community, only the mod who decided to remove half of the comments, ban people making reasonable comments and locked the thread.

This wasn’t a case of someone going to an anarchist community and starting arguments about why strong central authority is necessary or whatever, when you make a post, you don’t use your mod powers to pick and choose which comments you like, which you don’t and then lock the tread with a grand total of 10 comments.

And if anyone was swamping lemmy, it was the mod who posted like 15 anti-Harris memes within one hour and made it half of the local slrpnk feed that day.
