Technology@lemmy.zip•Huge win for Internet freedom: Google must sell its Chrome browserEnglish
2·1 year agoOnly Google being a monopoly has been ruled. The remedy hasn’t been decided. And your article is very out of date because the DoJ hadn’t even made their proposal then. That only happened this week. Google will give their proposal in December. The decision from the judge comes later in 2025. Then Google will appeal anyway. None of this is going to happen any time soon, and very likely it won’t at all given the chances coming to the presidency and their stance towards this sort of government action.

15·1 year agoThis is just what the DoJ is asking for. Google will give their proposal in December. Then the judge will rule later in 2025. Then no matter what Google will appeal. Nothing is going to happen for years, if at all.
On the other hand, I’m a mod for /r/GameCubeHacks and it’s great because I have access to all the piracy links the other mods remove. 🤙

That’s the company who made the pagers that Israel turned into bombs in Lebanon and Syria to target Hezbollah. Which also killed and injured other folks like children.
I wish I could find my old zip disks and drive at my mom’s house. It has my old middle-school AngelFire website files from a site I ran called DBZPlanet. Was mostly me learning Photoshop to cut DBZ characters out of their backgrounds and adding glow to them. Along with basic news about when Cartoon Network would be airing the next set of English translation episodes. My first website.

3·2 years agoI used to run a popular mod that made an indie beta game even more popular. Guess who almost all of the final testers were before release? My whole team. We were clearly the most devoted people to the game and knew best how to break it. It was nice to get a head-start on our new mod (which we pivoted to be the equivalent of Steam Workshop or an app store before those existed). Of course, the creator became a dickwad years later and we all ended the mod and the game is dead.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mozilla says Apple’s new browser rules are “as painful as possible” for FirefoxEnglish
12·2 years agoPretty sure the old fuckers in the legislature aren’t writing that into the contracts. If you ask them what browser they’re using they’ll probably say “internet.”

17·2 years agoTemporary monopolies are the governments reward to encourage new works of art and inventions. The trade off is that it’s temporary. By extending copyrights indefinitely it actually discourages new works to be created because they’re competing with more creations than ever, and nothing can be built as a derivative work. Trademarks, which Disney still owns, are protected basically indefinitely.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•High heels: clop clop clop clop clop
19·2 years agoI (male) had a pair of dress shoes that sounded a bit like high heels. You notice a lot of dudes turn their heads (or try to be more sneaky about looking) when your shoes make that noise. They were not stoked to see me instead.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘Reddit can survive without search’: company reportedly threatens to block GoogleEnglish
2·3 years agoAren’t all reddit comments under CC?
The main thing I’ve noticed is that Republicans have a much deeper bench than Dems. Too many younger Dems give up on leadership tracks because the old guard just won’t step aside. Fucking sad.

Memes@lemmy.ml•I like the interface, and have been a user of the reddit version for years...
41·3 years agoAlso using Sync. The thing is, I’m sick and tired of being told how I should need to interact with something. This isn’t an argument against FOSS at all btw. I also pay a non-FOSS one-man-shop for my RSS reader.
My main thing is I want to bend the web to my preferences instead of the other way around. If devs like this are going out of their way to do that I’m going to make it worth their while.
Shit, I even pay the guy who keeps the Chumby servers alive. Just so I can have a flash-baswd Star Trek themed clock face active on my nightstand.

Memes@lemmy.ml•I like the interface, and have been a user of the reddit version for years...
41·3 years agoYour comment implied that folks need to pay $100 to use the app. Only $20 lets a user disable ads and any tracking associated. Otherwise if someone wants to try it or just doesn’t feel like paying they can use it for free with the potential to get a Google ad in their scroll.
Yeah, but it’s a really weird libertarian thing where everybody feels like they’re an expert in their field and also everyone else’s. It’s a lot more fun to have in my RSS feeds since I realized that.

3·3 years agoHad the System UI crash this morning after updating. No problems since, however.

Nice. I’ve been making various models create QR code generators that only work within a terminal. Then they collapse when I tell them to make the code hardened against exploits.
