5·2 years agoNot the OP, but I’ve got the following bots blocked and it massively improved my Lemmy experience.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘It’s quite soul-destroying’: how we fell out of love with dating appsEnglish
251·3 years agoI gave up on online dating last year and I won’t be back. If that means I’ll end up dying alone, I’m honestly more comfortable with that idea than suffering though anymore of the bullshit that’s Tinder/Bumble/Hinge/etc. It’s become such a miserable experience for both sides (men and women).
As someone who had used online dating on and off for 10+ years, I can tell you one of the big problems - money and greed. I know it’s always easy to just “blame capitalism”, but I’ve seen first-hand the paradigm shift from an actual useful service (i.e. a way to meet people that you would otherwise not meet) to the blatant greed it’s become. The dating apps are so obviously profiteering off people’s loneliness it’s fucking disgusting. Back before Match bought everyone up, these services used to actually be okay for what they were.
I always heard that pearls/jade and n’joy were slower growing varieties of the original marble queen. I found that mine started to really take off after I pruned it back and stuck a couple of fertilizer sticks in the pot. I’ve also got a marble and I gotta say, it’s been keeping up with it growth-wise lately haha

Houseplants@mander.xyz•My landlord wants my potted plant gone :(English
24·3 years agoLooking at the pot, that’s legitimately the first idea I had if OP wants to go the malicious compliance route. I’d be tempted to build a table around the plant pot. Something like this (but for outdoors):

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•David Tennant praises Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who performance "What a force of nature"English
181·3 years agoWait, hold the fuck up. David Tennant is returning as another Doctor!? I haven’t watched much since the Matt Smith era, but how the hell does that work with the DW lore?
I struggled with this one even before I dropped it, so I feel your pain. Through some trial and error, I found that this guy likes lots of light and little water.
Light-wise, he’s in a east facing window that gets a ton of morning/early afternoon sun. Used to be in a spot that got direct sun but I had to move things around recently and it’s less direct now (so hopefully I haven’t jinxed it lol)
For watering, I know a lot of people say to do the “taco test” (i.e. fold the leaves gently and if they fold like a taco, then it’s time to water) but I found that was waiting too long between waterings. I just go on the weight of the pot now. I still wait until the soil is dry all the way through but not long enough that the leaves “taco”. I also feel like a shallow pot is super important. The grey cache pot is tall to allow hanging but the pot inside is only 2 inches deep (it’s a custom job, I cut a nursery pot in half). I’ve also found that it responds best to bottom watering because the water just kind of runs through if I go from the top.

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?English
152·3 years agoWhere did all the 90 minute movies go? I’m up for a longer movie if it can hold my attention (I have the same problem of dozing off) but 90 minutes was the sweet spot. Especially because you could make a late night (10pm or after) snap decision to watch a movie and still be in bed before midnight.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: If you find an interesting topic/rabbit hole, you can get some real engagement here if you share it. It doesn't get drowned out like elsewhere.
2·3 years agoGo for it man! I had never moderated over on Reddit but I wanted to contribute on Lemmy so I started up some communities. Everyone has behaved themselves so far and people have been pretty positive about things. Eventually it might get overwhelming (if Lemmy really takes off), but there’s always the option of adding more mods to help.

33·3 years agoI’m really digging the realistic take on the yellow suit. I think it works well.
Also, I hope there’s going to be a scene where he rips the sleeves off. Long sleeved Logan feels wrong 😂

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it just me or did anyone else became a more avid poster since joining lemmy?
1·3 years agoI’ve been trying to kickstart four communities because apparently I’m a masochist, but I’ve posted more in the last month than I did in the last 10 years on reddit. It reminds me a lot of my first couple of years on reddit (circa 2010/2011) and then my posting died off because you’d either get drowned out by the noise (hundreds or thousands of comments) or ignored in favour of a one liner joke.
I’ve seen a lot of people comparing Lemmy to early reddit, and I don’t necessarily disagree, but I feel like there’s one important distinction between the two. Even early reddit was driven by karma. There just wasn’t as much people >10 years ago. I find the lack of karma on Lemmy refreshing. How it’s gone back to the old forum way of just counting the number of posts is fantastic. It’s a weird habit to break out of though because part of me still wants to go “I got no upvotes, time to delete” or “I’m getting downvotes, better delete my post”.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Steam Summer Sale 2023 Recommendations Thread
7·3 years ago- The Yakuza games aren’t individually on sale (which is weird), but the Bundle and Collection are 70% and 75% off. Yakuza Zero is definitely worth playing, so for 30 bucks (in Canuck dollars), you basically get two more games for free in the bundle.
- RDR2 is 67% off and absolutely worth every penny.
- AC Origins is 85% off and AC Odyssey is 80%. I know some people have mixed opinions about Odyssey, but I honestly loved both of these games even if the historical accuracy…dips…in Odyssey.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing?
2·3 years agoWasn’t expecting someone to mention Yakuza when I opened this thread! I’m in the middle of playing Kiwami 2 right now after having played 0 and Kiwami 1 like 2 years ago. I’m super glad it had a massive recap of the previous game at the beginning because as much as like the series, there’s so much shit that goes on and I didn’t remember half of it. I think 0 is the standout in the series so far and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get into the games.

Houseplants@mander.xyz•Growing Succulents! Advice welcome.English
1·3 years agoSpecifically for the echeveria - they need a lot of light or they get etiolated. I had to give up on trying to grow them because of that (unless you like tall gangly plants lol).

Houseplants@mander.xyz•What are some plants that can thrive in environments with little light (like the bathroom)?English
1·3 years agoI’ll echo the sentiments already said. No plant will thrive in little light. They’ll basically only survive at best or just slowly die over time.
Have you considered a fake plant? I’ve got a couple of fake plants in areas where the light level is too low for any real plants to prosper. Sure, they don’t look as nice as the real thing, but they still add a splash of green which is welcome.
I’m enjoying it so far. I like that it’s not a direct one-for-one clone of reddit (not that it was intended to be). It feels like a combination of older reddit (> 10 years ago, when it wasn’t as active) and old school forums (like how older posts will bump if there’s activity). It makes me want to be more active vs being a lurker.
I have no intention of going back to reddit. I’ve already deleted RIF from my phone. The 3PA thing was the last straw for me, but I felt like reddit had been going downhill for a while and I think I had been looking for an excuse to fuck off but couldn’t quit cold turkey. Whatever good intentions that company might’ve started with, they’re just a greedy corporation now. They haven’t cared about their users for a while (which is interesting because their users are what create their content. Reddit itself doesn’t create anything).

You’re more than welcome to post on shitty food porn. There’s not a lot of activity and the votes will let you know if it’s the right place (I don’t remove posts unless they’re breaking rules). It kind of has two interpretations - pictures of shitty food (self explanatory) or food porn that’s shitty (ie bad lighting, bad presentation, etc).
Or let me know if you start an “average food porn” community and I’m more than happy to link it in the sidebar of SFP.
