Modern studies using freezers with well-understood properties have observed the Mpemba effect where water supercools before freezing. Water that starts out cooler tends to reach a lower supercooled temperature before freezing.
Also from the Wikipedia article.
If you define the Mpemba effect as hot water reaching 0 degrees faster, then no, it’s not observable. But if you define the Mpemba effect as heated water freezing sooner, (remembering that freezing can initiate below the “freezing point” when water is subcooled) then the Mpemba effect may be observed.
If true, it would be interesting that cool water is less likely to nucleate and form ice than water that was heated.

4·4 months agoI’ve discovered a fundamental flaw in this study. A few reasons people use carrots is that they are cheap, and they are discreet. Presumably this variant would be significantly more expensive. Also, nobody thinks you’re buying a regular to pleasure yourself, not the cashier, not your wife.

1·4 months agoMost humans have 3 working types of colour receptors that roughly correspond to red, green, and blue. A small number of people have a fourth, letting them see colours we can’t even conceive of. My friend has this and it makes me jealous.
I have been more often disappointed by sci-hub than satisfied, but maybe I just tend to look up more obscure or new research.

Futurology@futurology.today•New research argues Societal Collapse benefits 99% of people. Historically, the societies that have emerged after a collapse are more egalitarian, & most people end up richer & healthier than before.English
9·4 months ago“people in the post-Roman world were taller and healthier”
This is indicative of the timescale the researcher is examining. People don’t grow taller after they’re adults. Populations grow taller.
Societal collapse is bad, many people will die. It’s just good after the fact, if you survive. Unfortunately, the bourgeoisie forces the dichotomy: socialism or barbarism.

2·5 months agoCyclists are typically more likely to stop at a business because it’s just easier. In many cases bike lanes bring business, for the right kinds of businesses.
