Selfhosted@lemmy.world•good alternatives to raspberry pi which are cheap and efficient?English
11·3 years agoI got a mini pc (e.g. a NUC). I did this after the price for rasps went sky high. Check out used NUCs, you can get a lot of power for the price.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•iPhone users, what app do you use to browse Lemmy and what is the main reason you like it over others?English
61·3 years agoI use Voyager because it is very similar to Apollo. Also, you can self host it.

Technology@kbin.social•Home assistant: Philips Hue will force users to upload their data to Hue cloudEnglish
2·3 years agoGlad I moved completely away from Hue and now use mostly ZWave devices. From the article:
When asked what drove this change, the answer is the usual: security. Well Signify, you know what keeps user data even more secure? Not uploading it all to your cloud. Just allow a smart home to talk to Hue using the local API or Matter.
Security. What a load of nonsense.
“Divinity”. “Source”
I backup Proxmox VMs and templates onto my NAS, and from there into the cloud. If you don’t want the cloud maybe auto backup to an external drive and keep it somewhere safe (out of range of a possible disaster to your home)

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Should I go with a prebuilt or custom built NAS to get into self hosting?English
2·3 years agoI went with a Synology and have been very happy with it. Easy to use, very nice GUI, yet quite powerful with the features provided.
From there I moved on to NUC. I used to host several things through Docker on the Synology but I’m now moving many of those things to the NUC.

Fediverse@kbin.social•Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying hereEnglish
3·3 years agoVery well thought out post. It seems like they are considering pretty big measures. I think the next logical place to go for them is to whitelist instead of blacklist. Sucks for self hosters, but in general gives Beehaw what they want.
Moderation tools seem to be the biggest problem for the poster. They also say the devs don’t see it as a priority. They say they’ve even offered bounties to add better tool support. Moderation tools get brought up all the time on Lemmy—I agree that it should be the main focus or development right now TBH.

3·3 years agoI have a 5g home internet backup connection. My primary internet is fiber, so my thinking if there is a cut somewhere it could also affect cable, so I use over the air as my backup.
Reminds me of when I vacationed in New Orleans. I passed by the city hall at 9 in the morning and out of the building came several men in suits with Hurricanes in hand. Definitely weren’t the only ones with drinks either.
Yup. Frodo is seen as the main character but poor Sam does all the work.

Technology@kbin.social•Judge in US v. Google trial didn’t know if Firefox is a browser or search engineEnglish
8·3 years agoMehta even appeared briefly confused by some of the references to today’s tech, unable to keep straight if Mozilla was a browser or a search engine. He also appeared unclear about how SEM works and struggled to understand the options for Microsoft to promote Bing ads outside of Google’s SEM tools.
This is not the first thing I have heard troubling about judge Mehta regarding this case. He also ruled that it would not be considered that Google employees and executives purposely destroyed evidence related to the case. It’s not a good sign for the antitrust argument with a judge like this.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why wasn't former President Bush of the USA, charged with any crimes, when we marched into Afghanistan and Iraq by his orders, under pretenses?English
262·3 years agoHe should have been. Especially after the photos of Abu Ghraib came out. But it is the U.S. so he payed no penalties.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who is your favorite fictional character?English
4·3 years agoRand Al’Thor
If you are feeling it is wrong, then it’s not right for you.
I personally don’t have any problem with age differences. Unless the older person is deliberately taking advantage of the younger.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People of Lemmy, I dare you to name ONE billionaire that's done anything good.English
42·3 years agoThere’s a lot. In the late 1800s it started becoming something of a tradition for billionaires to move on to philanthropy after their retirement. J.D. Rockefeller was worth several hundred billion dollars in today’s money. He gave away close to 200 billion of it.
A more modern example that people have brought up is Bill Gates.
