For small model bonsai series seems getting the spotlight. Natively trained on1bit and ternary 1.58bit, 8B runs on ~1GB memory. I’m curios on local models but haven’t tried because of lack of gaming rig but it seems work enough for regular pc

No one mentions F1 hybrid? Mass produced vegitables and fruits are often offspring of 2 distinct varieties, carefully selected to inherit desireble traits from both sides but no guarantee for 2nd generation.
Kind of soft-lock drm bcs people need to keep buying the specific seed if people want max yield. (I’ve read article gathering seeds from store brought tomato, growth werent great and the yields were unstable in both taste and quantity, but they managed to iterate 6 generations or so. The “traits” of F1 offsprings stabilize around that so you can keep growing your own variety).
Heirloom seeds don’t have this issue, but they likely have quirks or less immunity compared to F1.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+
2·5 months agoIANAL but again, the program is not program in general sense. The regular “program” part here is ttf format and protocol around there, but protection goes over ttf data as a whole. It may be able to argue if such new font display system is developed and used, practically no gamedev/publishing industries want to reinvent the wheel and built the ecosystem from scratch.
Also, the infringement criteria is not necessarily on process but also end results similarity and intention in Japanese law. When intention comes up in argument defendant often provide proof they did not have access to the alleged source or its end product.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+
22·5 months agoJapanese law doesn’t consider font itself or the style to be copyrighted, but font files are considered “program” (it is very broad in jurisdictional sense, roughly translates to “digital data that produce products through computational process”, and displaying letters on monitor is applicable) and thus fall under under copyright protection.
Even regular neutral water shifts to slightly acidic (5.6) as long as it has contact to air (CO2 dissolving). Would be interesting to know how long those store bought alkaline water becomes base or acidic.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•They don't want people to pirate, but this is the service they want people to pay for.English
14·11 months agoIf you need translation for just getting facts and information for say math equation and its annotation translated, there’s little margin in variety, what you need is database - that’s mostly fine.
Pieces need translation are usually not like that. They have cultural context, pun, wordplay in rhymes, structural parallel, underlying tone, a lot of things only work in the language originally written. Translation is always a (nearly impossible) challenge for the translator to reconstruct all of them in target language.
I did game translation for a while. Translation is a field where AI hit first and honestly I’ve seen people lowering standards. The criteria of “good enough”, “passable” is not the same compared to pre-AI days, and will keep changing. I’m almost sure this trend is happening in every industry the same way, and “just translation” is a slippery slope.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Order of magnitude is a hell of a drugEnglish
11·11 months agoI heard once π²=10 is fairly accurate approx and thus g=π²=10 in astrophysics where people thinks in order of magnitude, not value.
But my engineering ass is telling assumptions with larger than 50% difference from actual value may cause issues on order of magnitude if the value is used multiple times and isnt it better be like 5=1/2×10?

Baking is chemistry for sure.

Japanese have have /h/, /ç/, /ɸ/ consonants in ハ行 (written as ha - hi - fu or hu -he - ho but pronounced differently). The consonant /ɸ/ is generally transcribed as f in alphabet.
フ(f+u) is the only letter that pronaunce /ɸ/ in regular ハ行, but ファ行 (f + other vowels) indicates sounds with /ɸ/.
Transcription of wifi in Japanese is ワイファイ, not ワイハイ.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do people make and save kaomoji art?
7·2 years agoJapanese here. There are specific editors often categorized as “アスキーアートエディタ” (Ascii Art Editor). They often come with libraries of existing AA to modify, and can display image with low opacity to “trace” image.
Large part of jp ascii art made/appeared in 90s to early 00s at underground forums like 2ch. Those editors were tailored for their speifics such as font family (MS-P Gothic) and size. The display/font system is different nowadays, but unlike “AA artist” in those times who is 100% comitted to make vertical line aligning pixel perfect most of people find those AA displays ok.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why isn't apple a popular ice cream flavor?
6·2 years agoKiwi and pineapples have enzyme to break proteins down, causing it taste better if they have contact to diary products long enough. Canned pineapples don’t have this issue but I haven’t seen canned kiwi, maybe that explains no kiwi ice cream

Games@sh.itjust.works•Layoffs hit Japan as Final Fantasy Brave Exvius developer asks 80 employees to “voluntarily resign”English
6·2 years agoIt’s just how they word layoff and severance package. In Japan voluntary resignation can be also entitled for severance package depending roles/duration of employment, and this gives larger package than regular voluntary resignation is entitled to, to make them resign “voluntary”.

I get where you’re coming from but texture in layman term is (microscopic) characteristic of the surface. You wouldn’t appreciate crisp 16bit RGBA pixels in your mouth when you bite an apple.
