I lived in China for 6 years. I experienced smogs dense enough you couldn’t see a building 10m away.

I’ve been travelling to Shanghai on several occasions and went there again last year.

The improvement now vs 10years ago is dramatic! I’m not saying it’s all fine, but I will say this: now I live in Canada (Québec) and forest fires make the air here worse than what it is in Shanghai on a regular basis.

The trend is what matters. China: electrification is going so fast it’s hard to follow. Pollution is going down very fast. The USA: cancel all plan to promote EVs and weaken regulation on gas cars: pollution is to go up. And that’s not including public transportation offset on the cars density, where China is basically 40 years ahead…

The cross-point on air quality might be much closer than you think.

It doesn’t, but it has an unapologetic mass surveillance. In China, you use apps on your phone for absolutely everything and anything: all payments, use of public transport, shared bikes, ordering food, etc.

If you say something wrong, or if you’re just in a group chat where someone repeatedly say the wrong thing, your account can be suspended and suddenly you can’t do shit for several days. That keeps people in line, or they find other tricks to communicate, like swapping key words to trick the algorithms, or use VPN, though it’s also forbidden.

  • Worse than that: no car maker can survive on the US market alone, and every other market is transitioning towards EV, more or less aggressively. Pretty soon the only thing that will keep the ICE business alive are stupid policies to give them an artificial competitive advantage.

I really don’t get what these CEOs have in their mind. At this stage I assume they’re like big oil execs: maximize short-term revenue, and be long gone when shit hits the fan. But for cars, the end is even closer than for oil.

  • Ukraine has autonomous drones as autonomous as “there must be a tank around these parts, go destroy it!” and it executes.

Now they even recognize the type of tanks, their armor, so that they target its known weak point, and if it can’t, it targets the turret to make it at least unusable.

They probably have something similar as a submarine drone they used to sink the Russian submarine (it was most likely too far and underwater for remote control, and the drones had to pick the right target, or had a precise map and not lose positioning).

So they’re probably close to make these slaughterbots also autonomous to some degree.

I never imagined humanoid shapes to be the perfect Terminators except for infiltration anyway…

  • It’s not just taking a stand. I may not be clear enough. There are 2 benefits in my eyes in defederating:

    • Prevent fake news flood that you will never be able to counter (Brandolini’s law).
    • Keep this a safe space for minorities (I’m sure we have some on this instance). They don’t have to read random crap about how they should not exist or other offensive comments, and they should be able to post about who they are without fear of getting targeted.

Time has proven again and again that tolerating the intolerants turns the place into an intolerant one.

As for how they’ll take it: I don’t have the slightest beginning of hope that exchanging with them here would have any impact on their world’s vision. You don’t convince cultists with rational discussions on Internet. So let them think they “proved their point”. I don’t care.

Edit: And of course, being MAGA is not who you are, but what you decide to be through your actions, for example registering to an openly fascist instance.

  • Except you can’t be neutral with people spreading hate. You can’t stay neutral when a side say “I just want to exist” and the other’s answer is “We should kill you all!”.

I think we all know the poem “First they came for…”.

    Let me add that quote:

“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” Albert Einstein

    You can’t be neutral here.
