Years ago I’ve seen a documentary about a semi-famous barbershop/beard grooming salon where they’ve asked the barber the same question. And the guy basically said: As hair grows in every direction, you - of course - have to shave in every direction as well to get a clean shave. And he emphasised that there’s nothing to all those stories of never going against the grain.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Anyone manage to order a controller?English
4·11 days agoYeah, also thanks to scalpers. (Also, since when is it legal to offer an item on ebay you don’t even have in your possession?)

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Voice notes are massive in some countries but not the UK - here's whyEnglish
6·18 days ago- are more conscious of the inconvenience the person receiving a voice note goes through.
Yeah, I don’t get why these 10-minute-monologue people can’t just use the dictation feature instead of recording a voice message. Text I can parse and find the important bits very quickly, a voice note I have to listen to carefully and sometimes even take notes. I hate them.

Programming@programming.dev•What was the smallest python hobby project you worked on?English
2·27 days agoWhat I did when starting out with Python: I’ve bought a book similar to the O’Reilly Pocket Reference and read it cover to cover to get an overview of the structure, syntax, and available objects and methods. Then started piecing my tools together by looking at other people’s code and copying the bits I could use. If you want some inspiration, have a look at my Python projects.
I’d use ImageMagick, but if you want to do it in plain* Python, here’s an example: https://stackoverflow.com/a/79683407
* Well, you’ll need pyAPNG.

Programming@programming.dev•What do you want out of a coding monospace font?English
10·29 days agoLigatures, slashed zeros, clearly distinguishable Il1/O0, not too big of a gap between lines, and maybe script-like italics. My current main monospace font is IosevkaTerm Nerd Font.
I also find the idea of using retro pixel fonts interesting, but so far couldn’t get myself to actually try some of the fonts mentioned here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47708411 .
No snow but hail in West London. And only for a minute or so. Not confused, but still cold. 😁
The main problem here is persistance. Most users are on machines that get turned off.
This! It only works if you have a server that’s online 24/7. Can be a VPS in a data centre, can be some Raspberry Pi running at your home with a DNS name pointing to it.

That’s the key point. Most paid plugins you can download only after paying. And if you get your hands on a copy, that doesn’t mean you’ll get updates, too. And running old plugins can considerably harm the security of your installation.
But if you can get your hands on a fully functional demo, you usually can remove limits.
TerraMaster F4-423 and then replace the internal USB drive with a fresh one and install OpenMediaVault or TrueNas or whatever.

I’m using News Explorer on all my Apple devices. It syncs my feeds and the read/unread states. And even supports a separate view for comments for many blogs.

London@feddit.uk•Stuck in the slow lane: Average bus speed in London falls below 9mphEnglish
2·5 months agoE.g. the 272 going North on Wood Lane has to cross the A40 intersection. But due to roadworks, the traffic going North is extremely slow. People coming from the A40 fill any gap that opens up and when the lights turn green for the bus, there’s nowhere for the bus to go. I’ve once spent like 20 minutes there without the bus being able to go.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•External storage on Steam OS is a problem
2·6 months agoWhat external storage are you using? Is it the same that worked so flawlessly on your PS5?
Because I’ve recently bought some M.2 SSD enclosures with a Realtek RTL9210B chip and those seem to be buggy in that the enclosure goes offline for a few seconds after some random time (hours to days).
And I only noticed it because of random disconnect notifications about the one I use for Time Machine.

Technology@beehaw.org•The simple test that blew up the FTC's case against Meta
3·6 months agoJohn List, a professor at the University of Chicago, recruited 6,000 participants for a study. With permission, he installed tracking software on their phones. And then he made them an offer: for every hour that the participant did not use Facebook or Instagram, he would pay them $4. (Participants only had to give up one app; the Facebook holdout group was allowed to use Instagram and vice versa.)
Initial results:
Facebook→ YouTube, Instagram, TikTok
Instagram→ YouTube, Facebook, TikTokCorrected for time spent on platforms:
Facebook→ Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat
