No Lawns@slrpnk.net•Pennsylvania, USA is trying to stop HOAs from banning native plant gardens.English
21·21 days agoI’m always down for conscious rebellion but that’s a great way to get a lien on your house if you’re caught for those who don’t know.
Growing any food in our front yard is illegal in my city. Guess who’s currently growing sage in the front garden.

602·21 days agoThere’s very little people can do. In order to fix things you usually need to get on the board, but the people who run HOAs are usually retired nimby assholes and they hold meetings while most in the neighborhood are at work so nobody can oppose them. They then reelect themselves to the board and the cycle continues. HOAs are usually a thing set up by the builders to make their lives easier for some paperwork and stuff. They absolutely suck 99% of the time.
Native plant garden bans aren’t just an HOA thing. Many counties or cities ban them too. Much of it stems for chemical manufacturers selling the white picket fence image after WWII to veterans receiving funding to buy a home. The chemical manufacturers pushed hard for that image so they could keep making as much profit as they made manufacturing for weapons during the wartime.
This means that trying to fight your HOA on yards is useless, you have to go higher and it’s a big big fight

Linux@programming.dev•Plans to remove ipv4 from the linux kernel.
10·25 days agoI mean I did say I hate ipv6…
But seriously, I think it has more to do with it’s slightly different, easier for ISPs to just add another NAT layer or whatever instead of learn the minor differences.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•POV: M$ releases a new VSCode version
3·25 days agoNot who you’re asking, but weighing in anyways. I use VSCodium for C# and Python development on Linux. Only extensions I needed was ms-python.python, ms-python.debugpy, and I use ms-python.vscode-python-envs
For c# it’s dotrush only.
All works. Step through debugging all works, no issues.
Uses slop generator, makes slop generation tool on GitHub, complains about slop.
This is the kind of dumbassery that always leaves me confused.

20·1 month agoMy state’s lottery team still use cobol, my buddy is working in fortran, and many sites I touched are running on php7 (discontinued in Nov 22). Not sure it’s really all that niche to work on old tech.

221·1 month agoAs someone who’s job involved VB6 just two years ago. I think we have a very different experience of software development. Sure there’s some companies who rush to the newest, but for others that costs money, they expect you to just keep plodding along with the tools you have.

511·1 month agoMost of the unmaintainable code I’ve seen is because businesses don’t appreciate the need to occasionally refactor/rewrite or do anything to maintain code. They only appreciate piling more on. They’d do away with bug fixing too if they could.
Most developers I’ve seen in the field don’t care about any of that. They care if the OS is stable and they can run their programs.
I’m not saying they shouldn’t care more, they absolutely should, but they don’t
“it’s simply too good”
Tell that to code reviews I’ve been rejecting because strong disagree. People are using it because they swallowed the snake oil, doesn’t mean we can’t keep fighting against it.

10·2 months agoOh no, Trump and Friends have been some of the most consistent people I have ever seen. Consistently awful and against all normal people maybe, but consistent

Looking good! One small thought though,
It’s probably okay since they’re close together and thick but you might want a brace between the legs at the bottom. Even just a small dowel or something, to help keep them spread as is over time
