Honestly, Animal Crossing in the game too.

Honestly, Animal Crossing in the game too.

I grew up in rural Alberta and now live in one of the big cities. I like it a lot. There are so many different people here from all walks of life. Lots on Ontario and BC transplants too!
It’s getting more expensive, but I’m glad we could still afford a home here. But industry keeps growing here, so we will see how long it lasts.
People complain about the traffic but I think most commutes top out at 1 hour here. Compared to what I’ve heard in Toronto, where many people travel 1–2 hours each way.
Weather is good - very sunny, we have seasons, warm winds break up the cold winters.
I think the politics aren’t unusual - the cities are quite liberal and the countryside is very conservative. Seems to be the same in other provinces imo.
Just like in any place - it’s mostly normal people living their lives.

I switched from Android to iPhone mainly for the iMessage capabilities. I didn’t have any other reason at the time, but now I’ve started adding in to the ecosystem (AirPods, and now an iPad). The integration is really nice and smooth. I do like how “user-friendly” it is - while I can use other platforms just fine, iOS is just simple and easy.
I didn’t, really. Just kind of ended up here and it’s not bad.

Bean counter.
Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat) is releasing their Twitter alternative this week, Threads.
There’s been some discussion on Lemmy recently about Meta sniffing around forums and the fediverse, so some people have wondered if Meta will get into this space too.

Same here - I hope more female-oriented communities get going. WitchesVsPatriarchy, TrollXChromosomes, and all the chaos of the Netflix Cinematic Universe reality shows were a blast on Reddit.
I have found [email protected] so far!

At the moment, it seems to be, “I can’t poop for 3 days.”

Great point that shareholders ruin everything. I invest but I’ll avoid certain companies or industries that don’t align with my values, even if those stocks have the most potential profitability. But this seems to be a very uncommon habit in the investing world.

I joined Lemmy during the blackout. Obviously it was crazy for a few days, but the last week and a half has been news, memes, and real conversations. Really enjoying it here so far!

Either cats or a vibrator.
Apparently it is also the 75th anniversary!

Canadian in a major city - yes, safe to drink right from the tap.
However, many remote communities here do not have access to safe drinking water.
Imo it is always hard to go from a movie/TV show to the book. Books create a universe inside your head, but now you’re already going into it with expectations. And when it doesn’t meet expectations, it’s disappointing.
I read The Handmaid’s Tale back around 2016, when Trump was elected. I was actually stunned that he had won - because like many others, I had missed the warning signs of a wave of populism. To me, this set the stage for The Handmaid’s Tale to feel like a very real possibility - if this guy is now in power, then what next?
It was easy to insert myself into the rather basic world of The Handmaid’s Tale especially with the humdrum details of everyday life. This dystopian world does not always look like outright torture or murder. It looks like fear, distrust, and control that has been normalized.
And quite frankly, I found that the Handmaid’s sole societal purpose of being continuously raped and impregnated is disturbing to the core. In your post, you’ve accepted that this is just part of the narrative. The abuse of female genitalia and reproduction is often overlooked in depictions of a dystopian world, so I think we’ve sanitized this brutal reality from the realm of possibilities. And yet, this is still a lived-reality for girls and women across the world today.

I had actually thought about signing up for the basic plan because it is just me who likes it, but I was put off by the low quality.
Well - I guess now I’ll be officially sticking to Plex.

Pickles and bacon!
I’ve been trying to go to my fitness class once a week. I’m keeping it up, so now I might bump it up to twice a week!

Great points here. Sometimes I will go for a walk and then wonder, why don’t I feel any better? And it’s likely because that wasn’t what I actually needed.

Thanks! Glad I asked - they made an interesting point at the end about younger people actually starting to prefer low to no alcohol in beer nowadays.
Corporate taxes - at least in Canada, you can have a year end any day of the year.
And yes, some older tax preparers don’t work in summer/fall.
