In the old days you’d go one after the other through public servers until you find one that’s decently moderated and not super toxic. And then people would get kicked/banned from the server for bad behavior. You learned to voluntarily avoid all the internet trash. That is actually a very important lesson that nowadays people mostly seem to lack. Thus they become mindless TikTok or Insta zombies consuming hidden advertising brainrot all day.

Yesterday I played a bit more and moved the node one floor upstairs into the attic. That, and playing with the exact placement, made quite a difference. I can now reach one node in the city center, distance shows 10km on the map. And the meshtastic app even shows signal level good. And from there my messages can hop to other nodes in the city too.
So I feel I got lucky and the antenna might be genuine?

…god damn

I mean it is generally hit/miss with AliExpress, but I’ve read that the Ziisor shop is quite reputable, which is why I chose it.

Generally, due to it’s low power properties, LoRa is not resilient to jamming, though the modulation itself should be quite robust.
If you think about situations as in Iran, where a rogue government would try to interrupt communications, then you don’t need to care about legality. This gives you some options. For example you could run meshes on multiple, normally illegal, frequencies. You could increase tx power, HeltecV4 has an output amplifier and you could build a node with an even bigger output amplifier. You could use high gain directional antennas to avoid noise, which might be not legal normally.
Personally what I would do is build many cheap solar nodes and program them in a way that they come up only for like 10-20mins randomly once per night. I would also scatter them in the area and make it such that every night a different subset of nodes comes online. The timing would be based on some pseudo-randomness where only trusted people know the seed/algo. If you can spend the effort then the node key exchange protocol in meshtastic is not great, maybe a predetermined node list or a manual authorization of keys by some master node could be developed. Also some means to hinder fingerprinting of nodes. This would make it a pain for the police to track and take down all nodes.
To keep costs low I’d use faketec boards with DIY antennas and solar panel, battery and outdoor case from aliexpress. Probably you could do 10$ for a board, 10$ for antenna materials and 10$ for rest, add in an amplifier and you’re maybe looking at 40$ in total. 10 nodes should cover a city with some redundancy and if it’s within some hundred kilometers to the border then you could have nightly cross border communication for less than 1000$ plus some weekend work for setting it all up. And some policeman would have to do nightshifts for weeks at a time to hunt down all the nodes, after which you could start over.

So my understanding is these drones were operating autonomously, meaning they were not teleoperated through an RC connection. If this is true this is a really nice engineering success. Finding the base can be done from preprogrammed flight paths.
But then the drone needs to reliably detect the planes. That is not easy as you would have little previous data of the base and probably also of the planes, at least in their russian air force paintings. My understanding is that the planes are quite rare and are also not operated by Ukraine so quite a challenge. The drone also needs to distinguish planes that haven’t been hit and planes that are already burning/damaged. Probably having training data on this specifically for the planes is even harder. Maybe one could make a generic burning object detector? Then for navigating the drone it needs to combine these infos into a map that’s good for 3d navigation and precise enough to point to the weak points at the wings.
And all of that needs to be reliable enough so that it doesn’t pose an overly risk for the civilian areas. And you basically have no way of really testing it out beforehand and doing development iterations.
Really well done from a technical point of view.

Thanks for pointing that out

Believe it or not, relative to the US economy the 66.9 billion is not much. But it’s not actually about the money, a lot of that already was spent a long time ago on military hardware so the expense was already made. It’s about whether you let Ukraine use these tools or decomission them inside the US, because that’s whats happening with a lot of kit like Bradleys or Atacms. There’s zero financial reason to not give those (except maybe for transportation cost).

You can still get the engines, batteries, controller boards, cameras, transceivers, gyro sensors, propellers, screws, cables, … from china without problem. You just need to do the assembly yourself. I guess that’s no loss because most probably Ukraine wants to mod the drones for their military needs anyway. So in reality that’s barely news, the only effect I can imagine might be a slight annoyance for volunteer units and self-organized donations. They now can’t use off-the-shelf DJI drones but have to go for brands that do the final assembly outside of china.

President Camacho Putin: Shit. I know shit’s bad right now, with all that starving bullshit, and the dust storms, and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

It’s probably these guys.
