That used to happen to me. I found I could only listen to audio books if I was doing something else to use up some extra “processing resources.”

I would describe it to other people as an overloaded circuit. If I applied all my brain power at the book, it would overload and shutoff.

If I was doing some tedious task that required some attention, but not too much, I could divert some of that excess energy away without overloading it. So for me that was, stocking shelves at work, doing the dishes, folding laundry, etc.

Driving wasn’t enough so I couldn’t listen to the book. (Though, later, I did train myself to and now I can do it fine)

  • Awhile back, I started tracking the time between the listed showtime and the actual start time of the movie. I logged them all and I would post it on Twitter. Then, Elon bought Twitter and I sort of abandoned the project (and Twitter).

At AMC (where I see most movies because it’s near me and they have a monthly pass), pre-roll/previews are 15-30 minutes long. The bigger and newer a movie is, the longer it is. Most tend to be around 20-25 minutes.

I started showing up 21 minutes late to most of them but I would usually be right on time for the start of the film.

  • I do preorder digital games but not just anything I’m excited about. It has to come from a single dev or small dev team that I specifically want to support, and help fund their progress. In this example, I’d preorder Haunted Chocolatier by ConceredApe (dev behind Stardew Valley).

OR, if the game is made by studio with a stellar track record or an absolutely phenomenal game. These more rare but their are a few. These also need to treat their dev team and customers well. No crunch. No shady micro-transactions.

For example, Hades 2 is something I would consider preordering. The next game by Larian Studios might also be on that list.

  • And they don’t get it right but want to move on with the conversation. Now you don’t hear anything they say, just trying to remember the word. You try to force yourself to listen but you can’t stop your brain from going through every word you know.

Two hours later you yell out “effervescent”. You’re overcome with relief only to realize the other person is one and now you’re in a work meeting.
