Australia@aussie.zone•Where the World’s $13T in Sovereign Wealth Is HeldEnglish
2·19 hours agoNorway taxes gas profits at 78% and so has built an enormous wealth fund over 30 years on the back of it. Australia’s equivalent tax generates $2 billion a year. The same resource, taxed very differently and guess who’s missing out?

2·2 days agoThank you for having a look.
The trouble with education spending in this country is that the govt subsidises the already wealthy schools that charge a mint as well as public schools in the poorest areas. This obviously skews in favour of the rich and middle-level schools while the public schools, which mostly have the most challenging teaching and learning situations, are not funded as they should be. The problem is worsened when parents choose private or Catholic schools for their kids in fear of the lacks of public education (unless the public school is in a middle-class area and then the school is better supported by the community) making the situation worse. Surprisingly, it’s been found that when it comes to academic results public schools punch above their weight. Nevertheless, the funding model is very flawed and we should keep demanding better funding for our public schools.

4·4 days agoI said there would be an uproar and I meant internationally.
Here’s a report on the interception of the flotilla from the Irish Public Broadcaster. People do care and the rest of the flotilla continues forward. In the video a GP is interviewed who is the sister of the Irish President and is on the flotilla still making its way towards Palestine. We have not heard the end of this matter.

6·4 days agoThey most certainly were not in a war zone. The flotilla was in international waters off Greece. Nowhere near Israel. Jumping a ship in international waters is an act of piracy and criminality as is taking hostages and beating them. I can bet you that if a humanitarian convoy were to be intercepted and people brutalised on the way to Ukraine by Russia, there would be an uproar. If we don’t care how other humans are treated, even our own citizens, then we are a sick and alienated society.

6·5 days agoBoth you and Gorgritch make really good observations. To add my 20c worth, of all the Liberal PMs in the last few decades he was the most progressive, not great as you point out, but his instincts were much more civilised and pluralist than the ‘conservatives’ and climate deniers who were baying for his blood and finally plunged the dagger.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Australia Just Entrenched Lower Wages for Young Workers
29·6 days agoThe new changes lock in youth rates for those aged eighteen and under. The percentage of the adult wage that eighteen-, nineteen-, and twenty-year-olds receive will increase each year. These rates will reach parity with the adult rates in 2029, 2028, and 2027, respectively. The catch, however, is that these increases and eventual parity only apply to young people who have worked at the same employer for more than six months. This caveat is ripe for exploitation.
I did not know about the caveat. Yes, young people will be further exploited. This is so wrong.

Australia@aussie.zone•Milk, bread prices to increase within weeks due to war in IranEnglish
3·11 days agoWelfare advocacy organisations are asking for an increase in income support because unemployment is expected to rise as well the cost of just about everything else. We’ve always got money for military weaponry (for Australia’s protection) but not so the people can eat and have a roof over their heads? Feeding and housing the population is the first priority I’d have thought, of any government particularly in a rich country like ours.
